Company History
1949

DEWITTA (today Wittenstein) established by two entrepreneurs - Walter Wittenstein and Bruno Dähn - in Steinheim, Germany. Using borrowed equipment, this small firm specializes in the manufacture of double chainstitch machines for glove making.

1955

DEWITTA's name changes to Wittenstein & Co.

1963

Walter Wittenstein takes over management responsibility of Wittenstein & Co.

1979

Walter Wittenstein's son, Manfred Wittenstein, takes over daily operations at the company.

1983

Global release of the first low-backlash planetary gearbox - the WPE, FR series. This gearbox design is now known as the alpha SP+.

1984

Founding of alpha getriebebau in Harthausen, Germany by Mr. Manfred Wittenstein.

1989

alpha réducteurs Sarl, first Wittenstein subsidiary, is established in Paris, France.
Cymex, the motion world's first mechatronics sizing and calculation software is developed and released by Wittenstein engineers.

1991

alpha getriebe Ltd. is established in Tokyo, Japan.

1992

alpha gear drives, Inc. is established in USA.
Wittenstein begins developing electromechanical servo actuators (the TPM series) based on the alpha products and established Wittenstein Motion Control.

1996

alpha drives ab is established in Malmö, Sweden.
FAtec Co. Ltd. is established in Seoul, Korea.

1997

North American facility is opened in Elk Grove Village, IL.

1998

alpha gearheads UK is established in Stoke-on-Trent, UK.

1999

The demand for customized motors leads to the founding of Wittenstein cyber motor.
Expertise in motors and electronics brings the development of Wittenstein intens for supporting medical applications.

2001

Bastian, experts in gearing technology, unites with Wittenstein and becomes Wittenstein Bastian.
Wittenstein AG is established in Switzerland.
alpha riduttori S.p.A. is estabished in Bresso, Italy.
alpha getriebe is established in Leobersdorf, Austria.

2003

Alpha Benelux B.V.B.A. is established in Lochristi, Belgium.
Electronics are added to the Wittenstein actuators to make compact sytems for use in military applications and in simulator technology, leading to the formation of Wittenstein Aerospace & Simulation in North America, UK and Germany.

2005

alpha mechatronics Co. Ltd. is established in Hangzhou, China..
Wittenstein transilvania SRL is established near Sibiu, Romania.

2007

Wittenstein develops further electronical components to compliment mechanical and electromechanical lines, leading to the founding of Wittenstein Electronics.
Mr Manfred Wittenstein is elected President of the VDMA.

2008

All alpha subsidiaries and locations are relaunched with the new company name of Wittenstein.
The 1,000,000th alpha gearbox is sold.
Wittenstein ibérica S.L.U. is established in Barcelona, Spain.
Wittenstein Co., Ltd. is established in Taiwan.

2009

Wittenstein continues to lead the world in supplying solutions in motion, providing answers for your motion needs.
